Founder Claire Cheney is an adventurous, self-taught cook who has travelled throughout the world. Over the last five years she’s visited spice farms and communities in over 10 countries sourcing the best spices to bring back to her native New England.
Curio Spice Co., based in Cambridge, MA specializes in sustainably produced spices sourced locally and from around the world. Their mission is to build relationships with small-scale farmers, share their stories through unique blends and support fair trade. They are an independent women-owned Certified Benefit Corporation.
OUR ADVENTURE WITH CLAIRE
As part of her ongoing world-wide search for unique relationships with sustainable farmers, Claire and her family traveled to Sicily last year to meet Maurizio and Katia Marino, a brother and sister duo who run a specialty farm near their home in Ferla. The Marino family not only produces an award-winning olive oil but harvests exceptional wild herbs that flourish in the Mediterranean light and limestone-rich soil. Just the kind of herbs that Claire seeks on her travels.
Smitten with the searing blues of the Ionian Sea, ancient ruins and incredible array of aromatics harvested by her producers in Ferla, she jumped at the idea of making her way back to this stunning part of the world, spending time with Maurizio and Katia and most of all, the opportunity to share a part of her world with a group of passionate travelers and foodies!
Immerse yourself in the cultural landscapes of Sicily with us!Our journey with Claire is crafted for the food and culture enthusiast. Keeping with our love of slow travel experiences, we’ve based our stay in the beautiful hill top town of Taormina allowing us to explore a taste of the eastern region of Sicily by day tripping to a few hand-selected villages. Taormina is a gem, with spectacular views of majestic Mt. Etna, a remarkable Greek theater, narrow winding streets full of unexpected delights from traditional trattorias, charming cafes and Michelin restaurants exploring new ways of using the islands extraordinary plethora of fresh ingredients coming from the rich volcanic soil and turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea. We’ve also factored in a fair amount of time to relax and truly connect to the heart of Taormira during this journey. And if that is not enough to entice the senses our visits to our hand-selected villages where we’ll tour and taste our way through boutique wineries; peruse outdoor markets in search of the freshest ingredients to include in our hands-on cooking classes, along with our hunt for the perfect gelato just might do it. EXPERIENCE | This culinary adventure with Founder Claire Cheney of Curio Spice Co, is open to all those who are passionate about food, different cultures and enjoy learning something new with a group of like-minded travelers.
ACTIVITY LEVEL | Requires moderate physical activity. You need to be able to participate in physical activities such as longer walking tours, walking over uneven terrain, climbing steps and be comfortable with some periods of standing. This particular tour is not suitable if you have limited mobility.
