Exploring the “Poetics of Place” with India Flint

Villaggio Albergo – Italy

August 23-28, 2018

Our Muse:

India will be traveling to Italy from her farm in the deep south of Australia to share her wandering spirit and creative gifts with us. She is best known for developing the highly distinctive botanical-print, an ecologically sustainable plant-based printing process that gives brilliant color to cloth.

She completed her MA in 2001, researching eucalyptus dyes for textiles, with 20 plus years working with plant dyes, her textile practice embraces art, theatre, science and fashion. Eco Colour, Second Skin, the Bundle Book, Stuff Steep + Store and On Wandering Wind are a few of her beautiful works of print. Represented in both private and museum collections in the U.S.A., Europe and Australia, she has undertaken costume commissions for Leigh Warren & Dancers as well as the West Australian Ballet. Using dyes of the leaves, roots and flowers to color cloth, yarn and paper, she continues her journey into botanical alchemy.

The Workshop:

Since the middle ages, the region around Pescia has enjoyed a rich and respected history of papermaking. One of the paper mills in the region even supplied the cardstock selected by Napoleon Bonaparte for his wedding invitations (samples of which can be viewed at the paper museum).

Join India Flint for a paper-dye intensive, during which you will print, colour and stitch into paper as well as exploring drawing and collage; working with fine art papers produced at the 600+ year old Cartiere Magnani paper mill as well as a selection of other delights that India will bring.

During our week together we will construct a complex inspirational journal comprising not only the dyed and embellished papers, but also fresh pages into which you can work after you return home. You will create a beautiful soft cover using leaf-printed silk, with pockets for secreting treasures, and we will make a wrapping cloth to keep it safe.

We may visit a paper museum and a working paper mill. There will be poetry, we will make ink from local materials and harvest leaves from the landscape and along the way India will share her personal folded book techniques, handy for quick notes and sketches.

 Location:

We’re wandering off the beaten path into the hills of Italy to capture the true spirit of Tuscany. Characterized by its lush green landscapes, slow pace and passion for traditions that speak of a lifestyle more in line with the rhythms of nature. Pescia and its ten castles baptized by Jean-Charles-Léonard Simonde de Sismondi with the words: “How wonderful! This is the Switzerland of Pesciatina” since it reminded him of the lush and varied Swiss landscape is to be our home away from home for six enchanting days.  So where on earth do we find Pescia..  in the province of Pistoia, between Lucca and Florence sits this charming gem.

This magical historic medieval town situated on the banks of the Pescia River is not only an important center for flower cultivation, it has also been a significant region for the paper making industry, producing some of the finest papers since the 18th century.  With papers produced from these mills, we’ll dye, work with inks, collage and infuse poetry to create beautiful hand stitched journals and with wind fallen treasures found along the way we’ll dye sumptuous silk and wool wraps. Ancient buildings; elegant churches; lush landscapes; thermal waters; wineries reminiscent of another time and sweet nectar producing olive groves these are you everyday inspirations, your everyday muses during your time in Pescia with us.
