 Our Muse:

Allison travels to Greece from her home in Florida, to share with us her passion and talent for plein-air painting. Allison began working as a studio artist in her early twenties, and has since worked as an animator, illustrator, textile artist, licensed interior decorator, and art teacher on the staff of the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. Allison paints from her own photographs of Florida, as well as other remote places from her kayaking and hiking travels. As a lifelong environmentalist, her creations manifest her love of nature. Allison’s works are represented in over 700 public and private collections in the United States and abroad. She has taught painting for 30 years, during which time she has had more than 30 solo exhibits, including in museums, universities and private galleries. She is best known for her vivid depictions of wild Florida, which she began painting as a small child.

What to Expect:

When was the last time you stepped outside, into the sunlight, and inhaled a deep breath of salty sea air? When was the last time you walked over cobblestones, climbed ancient stairwells, and emerged above the world to set up your watercolors and easel? When was the last time you took a week just for you – for your creativity, for your art, for your pure and simple joy?

For those who love the open air, panoramic landscapes, the golden sun, and the turquoise Aegean, there is plein air painting. For those who love culture, history, and unforgettable cuisine, there is Greece.

It is here, in this spectacular setting, that artist Allison Watson shares her incredible talent with us. From in-depth basics to detailed demonstrations, from practiced techniques to lessons in layout, composition, color mixing, value (light and dark), Allison works closely with us – with you, one-on-one – to build your skills at your own pace.

“Everyone will complete one or more small paintings at each of the beautiful locations of Santorini. These include rugged landscapes, seascapes and historic sights, turquoise water and quaint villages and castles. Every participant will have personal attention and will work at their own pace. You will work with acrylic paint because of its spontaneous and forgiving quality. You will learn the basic techniques of creating a plein-air painting including color mixing and basic composition, etc.” – Allison

For a week, you’ll dedicate your time, your energy and your creativity to building your skills, to creating new habits, and to immortalizing your memories with paint. Along the way, you’ll tour the crescent of Santorini, filling your sketchbook with mementos, memories and drawings.

Like paint drops on a blank canvas, the crescent of Santorini adorns the aquamarine depths of the Aegean. Five islands – Thíra, Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea and Nea Kaméni – make up this scenic archipelago, oft referred to as the precious gem of the Aegean.

Comprising the southernmost border of Cyclades, Santorini is a place not only of beauty but of history. You’ll see it as soon as you arrive: It’s unmistakable, when you look at these timeworn cobblestones, which have witnessed the footfalls of great thinkers, of politicians, and of everyday man. It is evident in the meandering alleyways that lead to ancient homes, where families have cooked their evening meals for centuries.

Here, the sun always seems to fall on something new to see, something new to paint. There are the red-sand beaches and blue-domed churches, the alabaster buildings and the rainbow of flowers in bloom. There are the white-capped waves and the cerulean sky, the terraced homes and the vibrant markets.

Let this historic town inspire you. Let the wisdom of the ages awe you, the beauty of this setting fill you with wonder. Let the sea breeze blow through your hair, the briny scent enliven your senses. Let your taste buds delight in fresh olive oil and Greek wine. Let your soul drink in the splendor of a Santorini sunset.

Let yourself love this place. Let this place love you. Let your creativity soar.

Perched on an ancient hilltop,

Surrounded by a varied palette –

A diverse rainbow of blues and whites –

Sits the island paradise of Santorini.

Sits Fira.

Fira, an ancient town.

Fira, a modern wonder.

Overlooking the sparkling Aegean,

Where briny breezes dance,

And turquoise sea fades into cerulean sky,

Santorini is an artist’s paradise,

An island dedicated to plein air.

Step into history.

Step into beauty.

Step into Santorini.
