Our Muse:

Natalya travels to Greece from her home in New York, to share with us her exceptional passion and talent for stitched art. She focuses on delicate stitching drawn from natural inspirations, in an art that is rooted in Natalya’s Russian heritage, a love of fabric, and her twin architectural muses: St. Petersburg and New York City. Her art has been accepted into the Quilt National 2017, featured in Breakout: Quilt Visions 2016 at the Visions Art Museum in San Diego, CA; Quilt National 2013 at the Dairy Barn Arts Center in Athens, OH and 63rd Annual Art of the Northeast at the Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, CT. She has been published in Fiber Art Now, Quilting Arts Magazine, Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine, Art Quilting Studio and has made appearances on Quilting Arts TV. She earned her BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY and had a previous career in the fashion and film industries.

What to Expect:

Have you ever run your fingers over bolts of fabric or textiles, pausing every few seconds to marvel at a new texture or a startling depth of hue? Have you ever stared out at a cityscape or ocean panorama, and lost yourself for minutes (or hours) – a meditation of fascination, at the beauty and splendor of the world before you?

Is art, for you, more than a simple act of creation? Does it help you to express yourself – to capture the world the way you see it, and not the way a camera does? Does art relax you? Does it speak to your soul?  If the answer is “yes” (to any or all), then your newest inspiration awaits you in Greece. Over eight days and seven nights, we invite you explore one of the world’s most beautiful, most historic, most meaningful places: Greece, the cradle of modern civilization and home to spectacular scenery.

Together with talented textile artist Natalya Aikens, you’ll learn how to translate what you see with your eyes, to what you make with your hands. You’ll learn about stitched art – hand stitched textural landscapes. Natalya will teach us to stitch on the fly, to interpret the scenes before us with stitches and fabric, instead of with brushes and paints.

As we wander the storied streets of Greece, we’ll pick out a special spot and make a thread sketch of the scene. We’ll snap a few pictures of the scene and later, in the hotel, we’ll work on the details, textures and colors while looking at our pictures as reference.

What you’ll take home? Innovative techniques, fresh experiences, and newfound friends – and a portfolio of stitched art  that will serve not only as a treasured memento of your journey but as a well of inspiration to incorporate into your future works of art!

And oh, about those excursions: We’re in Greece, a country that begs exploration. And explore, we will! We’ll trace the footsteps of great thinkers and politicians, philosophers and the gods, jumping from ruins to oracles to ancient olive groves. This is a place that will awe you, enthrall you, and then inspire you.

Escape with us. Relax with us. Enjoy with us. Put life aside, if just for a week, and indulge in your art – in a getaway that’s all about you. Over the course of our workshop, we’ll balance sightseeing with sketching, creating and stitching. Accompany Natalya on a journey of artistic discovery, in creative representations of Nafplio, Athens, Corinth, and other destinations you’ve read and dreamed about.

Infuse your art with fresh thought, innovative inspiration, and fresh creations. Step outside your comfort zone as you delve into the stitched arts. Experience a new place and make new friends. Seize opportunity!

For the next eight days, we’ll luxuriate at Nafplia Palace, a well-appointed and modern hotel in the seaport town of Nafplio. Take a deep breath – that’s the scent of the Mediterranean. Look out the window – that’s a glimpse of the Aegean. Walk out the front door – that’s the Bronze Age Acropolis of Akronafplia around you, historic Nafplio beneath you, and the Bay of Argolis before you.

This is a special hotel, designed by an award-winning architect, steeped in ancient history, and comprised of a collection of comfortable rooms, spacious villas, and luxurious bungalows, complete with outdoor Jacuzzis and private heated pools. There’s a good reason the Nafplia Palace is called the Jewel of the Peloponnese.

It’s not all about the luxe digs, perfect location, and beautiful panoramas, though; we’re also here for the facilities. Three restaurants and two bars join other facilities, including our studio, which is open 24/7 to our workshop.

Cozied up to the scenic coastline of the eastern Peloponnese, the seaport of Nafplio is one of the world’s most beautiful and historic cities. Flowers form colorful canopies over ancient streets; the ocean peeks out from behind every corner; and historic architecture is forever on display.

Indeed, the town’s history stretches back into the annals of time. Our home-away-from home has served royalty (and humanity) for centuries: the lordship of Argos and Nauplia during the Middle Ages, the de la Roche after the Fourth Crusade, the Republic of Venice and then finally, the Ottoman Empire. In the 19th century, this small town became the first capital (1823-1834) of the newly-born Greek state.

If you’re looking to be inspired by your surroundings, this is the place. The place to explore not one, but three UNESCO World Heritage sites (on your doorstep), the place to branch out into ancient Greece, the place to explore human history and modern politics.

Here, it’s just as easy to view the Bourtzi from a boat, as it is to climb 999 steps to a Venentian masterpiece of military architecture, the Palamidi Fortress. It’s easy to hop in the car and head out to explore vineyards and olive groves, Corinth and Delphi, Athens and Mycenae.

And if all this history doesn’t stoke your creative fires, Nafplio still delivers. Known for its funky and artistic vibe, this seaside town is sprinkled with cafés and gelato joints, Italian restaurants and little galleries. Nafplio is a town that can stand up to even the worst case of creative block.

Wrapped in a historic setting,

Touched by modern luxuries,

Bathed in scenic seascapes and panoramas,

Nafplio sets the perfect scene for stitched art.

Scents of the Mediterranean,

Sights of the Aegean,

Cradling whispered stories from history –

Be inspired.

Inspired by ancient memories,

And modern beauty.

Translate these sights, these sounds,

These experiences.

Immortalize them,

With thread and textile –

With an art that remembers

more than what your eyes can see.

Come, explore Greece with us.

Learn the art of stitched creations,

with artist Natalya Aikens.
