Textile Art Workshop
Artist Linda Matthews
Trip Dates September 13-19, 2017
As we travel, we’ll pay attention to the things that happen along our journey; the small moments, the beautiful moments, the moments that touch our hearts. Then we’ll collect those memories and incorporate them into beautiful textile art “fragments”. – Linda Matthews
Linda Matthews is a full time digital and mixed media textile artist, designer and teacher. She has been a National Educator with Janome America and travelled extensively throughout the US teaching workshops and classes before settling down and starting her own textile art business in 2008. Her artwork has been included in a variety of magazines and books along with her art quilts that have traveled the world displayed in special exhibits. Curious by nature, she’s always creating and exploring new ways to make art that is personal to her. Using a combination of digital imagery, surface design and mixed media processes, all blended together with creative sewing techniques to create art quilts, art bags, fabric journals. Most recently Linda has developed Fragments, which are small pieces of textile art that can be used as a form of story-telling and memory-keeping. Linda loves nothing more than sharing and inspiring others to think, sew and make textile art in a creative way.
Sometimes the best memories are the ones that touch our heart and soul in small, unusual ways. In this special workshop we’ll be traveling through Santorini with our eyes fixed not only on the beautiful city and its surrounds, but we’ll also be on a quest to discover the small hidden treasures that have personal meaning only to us. To remember this special time, along the way we’ll be creating pieces of textile art called “Fragments”.
“Fragments” are small stitched textiles that are a fusion of fabrics, fibers and papers, images and words, and found objects collected along the way. All these pieces are hand stitched together using a free-form sewing technique to form a beautiful collaged fabric travel journal that contains secret pockets and places to hold the things we most want to remember about this trip.
As we travel we’ll observe and capture our favorite moments and memories using photography, sketching and journaling. We’ll use the reference material that we collect along the way to create our stitched Fragments both on-site and later at the hotel. Our favorite photos will also be printed right onto fabric so they can be easily stitched into our Fragments to create our unforgettable memories.
Once completed, your Fragments Journal will become a unique and personal memento of a wonderful trip abroad. Every time you look at it you will be reminded of this special time and place.
Sun-splashed and whitewashed Santorini is comprised of five islands: Thíra, Thirassiá, Asproníssi, Palea and Nea Kaméni. Shaped like a crescent, scenic Santorini is often called the precious gem of the Aegean – and for very good reason.
This idyllic setting in the southernmost part of Cyclades, is home to some of modern civilization’s oldest memories, now housed in meandering alleyways and cobblestone streets, terraced white houses and blue-domed churches, red-sand beaches and ancient volcanoes.
Here, the breeze always seems to carry in something special – not only of ripening olives and fermenting grapes, not just of fresh-ground hummus and briny sea. It’s the whispers of history that dance in Santorini’s gentle winds. It’s the echoes of the sunset and the call of church bells.
It’s inspiration. Because, if Santorini is anything, it is a blue-and-white, sweet-scented, rich-with-history, 360º panoramic utopia for artists. It is a place tailor-made for inspiring our creative souls!
Welcome to Santorini, welcome to paradise. This is going to be a special trip.
A tiny paradise sits above,
Above the hustle, above the bustle,
Above the sights and sounds of Fira.
Overlooking a bleached white-and-blue panorama,
Where the salty Aegean drifts in on the breeze,
And the millennia whisper their secrets,
Santorini sings to an artist’s heart.
